BarcelonaRussia carried out a drone strike with a propulsion drone this Thursday against the train station in Dnipro, in eastern Ukraine, which has left at least 13 dead and a dozen injured. The direct impact on one of the platforms affected a train full of passengers, which was at the station at that moment, according to reports from local authorities. Ukraine's railway services had issued a high danger warning at the station, but despite this, there were people on the platform. Shortly after, in broad daylight, another attack took place in the city of Chernihiv, in northern Ukraine, where two teenagers died.
After the attack on the train station, the Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, denounced that Russia has perpetrated various "terrorist attacks" against Ukraine "since sanctions were lifted on certain Russian oligarchs and the Russian energy sector." Without mentioning him directly, the Ukrainian leader thus criticized the recent moves of the United States.
For weeks, Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin have moved closer together, especially regarding commercial collaboration. At the beginning of this month of October, the White House announced the purchase of 300,000 tons of Russian diesel, thus bypassing the sanctions against Moscow. A few weeks before the midterm elections, which are held next Tuesday, Trump was looking to lower the price of diesel in the US, which has recently reached historical records. Among other things, the rising cost of fuel and the cost of living are causing his popularity to plummet.
A few days later, the US president requested that Ukraine have a new president soon. The New York tycoon's next move was to temporarily suspend a package of sanctions against Russia, with an executive order that froze, among others, the sanctions against individuals and entities linked to the Kremlin, as well as tariffs on importers of Russian hydrocarbons. Kyiv responded to this agreement by bombing an oil terminal in Saint Petersburg, in one of the most significant drone attacks of the entire war, which left Russia's second most populous city paralyzed for several hours.
Putin reinforces his conditions
All in all, the Russian president has managed to have Trump serve Russia's interests in recent weeks. Incidentally, Putin, who met last week with Trump's special envoy, Steve Witkoff, is trying to toughen the conditions for a possible peace agreement with Zelensky, and Moscow has made it clear this October that it will not return the strips of territory it controls in the Sumy, Kharkiv, and Dnipropetrovsk regions, which the US was hoping to use as a bargaining chip in negotiations with Kyiv.
