These are the first 100 educational centers that the Government will air-condition
Illa has promised that in five years all public schools and high schools will be adapted to high temperatures
BarcelonaThe President of the Generalitat, Salvador Illa, has promised that within five years all public schools and high schools in the country will be air-conditioned. The measure will involve an investment of up to 2.5 billion euros –approximately one million for each center– which is expected to be mobilized between this school year and the 2030-31 school year (when the current legislature will have already ended at least three years prior).
For now, the Government will prioritize 100 centers (including nursery schools, schools, and high schools), where it will inject 100 million euros so that they are adapted with "integral air conditioning, mechanical ventilation, and renewable energy" at the latest by the end of the next school year.
In addition, a 20 million euro shock plan is also planned to install fans in 392 schools and institutes in 2026, while the work to air-condition them is not being carried out. The announcement comes after one of the teachers' complaints this school year has been the heat suffered in the classrooms, since some centers have held classes at over 30 degrees in May and June. In fact, the situation led to the creation of movements like Classrooms Burning, in which it was the teachers themselves who measured the temperature of their classroom to have a record of it and denounce the conditions they were facing when teaching class.
This Monday the Government also recalled that almost 3 out of every 10 centers have buildings dating from before 1960 and up to 70% were built before the Thermal Installations Regulation was applied and, therefore, do not have mechanical ventilation systems to meet current standards.
