Six pastry shops in Vilafranca and three in Barcelona place rings and bracelets valued at 1,000 euros inside Three Kings' Day cakes.

The initiative comes from the jewelry company Moner, which started doing it in 2024 and has continued it this year.

Vilafranca del Penedès and BarcelonaThree years ago, jeweler Gena Moner thought she could hide the handcrafted jewelry from her workshop inside the traditional Three Kings' Day cakes sold by local bakers. This year, for the third year cConsecutive, it returns, and has also added three pastry shops in Barcelona. So, in the Three Kings' Day cakes made of marzipan, cream, truffle, or custard, in addition to the figure of the king and the bean, someone might also find 18kt yellow gold rings with a natural blue sapphire and a natural diamond, and thread bracelets with 18kt yellow gold and also a natural diamond.

The bakeries that have joined jeweler Gena Moner's initiative are six in Vilafranca del Penedès – Bertran, Celis, Galí, Parés, Ríos, and Trenes – and three in Barcelona: Canal, L'Obrador dels 15, and Sacha. Each establishment incorporates two jewels of each type into the Three Kings' Day cakes they bake between January 5th and 6th. The lucky winners, in addition to finding a jewel, also receive another prize from the bakery: a free dessert, which they receive upon presenting the jewel found inside the cake. The first year the Vilafranca jeweler conceived this initiative, she found that the bakeries had queues outside to buy the cakes, and Moner also saw an increase in customers coming to the jewelry store to purchase the same piece she was raffling off. Three years ago, the pieces hidden in the Three Kings' Day cakes cost €650 for the rings and €250 for the bracelets. This year, the ring she gave to the bakeries is valued at €780, and the bracelets at €195. The jeweler says that if they had had more pieces in the shop, they would have sold more. Where chance fails, money can.
