The manipulations of the PP
“We will not allow the attempt at emotional manipulation of the Spanish people.” These words are Feijóo’s, to justify the PP’s refusal to attend the minutes of silence for the death of Maricarmen Abascal. An exercise in insensitivity that portrays the character and manifests his inability to grasp the moods of the citizenry.
You don't play with housing. 76% of the population (according to the CIS survey) believes that the State must intervene in the housing market. The right has opted for the demagogic discourse of attributing the distortions of the real estate market to those who come from outside. We already have the enemy, the immigrant, who is the eternal alibi. The jingoistic logic of us and the others to justify the outbursts of the right, obscenely distorting reality. We need those who come from outside to work. And what is needed is more protected housing.
We are living in a moment of social explosion, emergency decrees, early elections, with a general strike on the horizon. And Feijóo is on his way to achieving an extraordinary success: that the mobilizations are not against the government but against them. In his fight for power, he not only wants to control ideas and projects but even sensitivities: it is forbidden to lament an eviction. And suddenly the general strike for housing bounces back against him.
Although the polls give him good prospects, at a time when the government's wear and tear is manifest, Feijóo continues to overreach without any respect for a citizen's right such as the right to vote. Vox is cutting into his space day by day with its commitment to post-democratic authoritarianism. And Feijóo's latest whim has been to deny, in the name of his party's interest, an elementary principle of democracy: the fundamental right to vote that every citizen has. A right that the PP wants to violate in two cases: by denying the vote to the grandchildren of Spanish exiles who have been granted nationality and, one more trick, by canceling the postal vote.
Knowing the origins of the PP, it would be logical that among the heirs of the exile there would be few votes for them. The pretense – a brilliant contribution from Ayuso – that the Post Office can manipulate the votes that pass through its channels, without evidence, is an ignominy. In any case, who can vote is determined by the law, not the PP. Feijóo must have little confidence in himself if he needs to make himself so evident.
