The Foix de Sarrià bakeries, of sweet: the poet's cousin dies

Traditional and modern pastry-making have made Foix a leader in recent years

Sarrià/BarcelonaJordi Madern, cousin of the poet J.V. Foix, with two Foix bakeries in the Sarrià neighborhood, died yesterday afternoon at the age of 88. An energetic man, he had worked until his last days in the bakeries, where he attended to customers who asked for him or stayed in the office. In the workshop, located on Carrer Major de Sarrià, he has several pastry chefs, including Joe Moretones and Oriol Madern Mas, his brother, retired, and a nephew, Albert Madern, in whom he trusted to continue the business when he was no longer there.

The Foix bakery has been in the news in recent years for winning the chocolate 'mona' competition with a powerful monkey that everyone praised because it looked like it was about to speak. In addition, the bakery has also created a new sweet, the 'ensaïmattone', a mixture of 'ensaïmada' with a panettone dough interior. Both creations, the 'mona' and the 'ensaïmattone', are the work of pastry chef Joe Moretones, who works there during the busy periods of the workshop: Christmas and Easter. On the other hand, traditional bakery specialties such as the famous 'petxines' and 'boires', always covered in chocolate, are a constant creation of the workshop, and two of the great sweet attractions of Foix de Sarrià.

At this time of year, mists and scallops compete with artisanal ice creams. Anyone who has ever entered La Foix knows they will find something they like: sweet or savory, because at the establishment on Carrer Major in Sarrià there is also a counter with charcuterie for sale.

The funeral Mass for Jordi Madern will be tomorrow, Sunday, at 9:00 AM in the church of Sant Vicenç de Sarrià. And the wake, today, Saturday, in the chapel of La Puríssima, inside the same church of Sant Vicenç, from 4 PM to 9 PM.
