Saint Sadurní d'AnoiaIn Sant Sadurní d’Anoia, everyone was talking about it these past few days and the questions were constant. What will be the name that replaces Cavatast to refer to the festival that takes place on the first weekend of October in the town and which, until this year, only grouped cava cellars? Some neighbors said that not even the mayor of the town, Pere Vernet i Caldú, knew, even though it was the town council itself that had commissioned a naming company to find a new name. "Everything is under wraps so that no one knows until the day they announce it," the neighbors continued to explain. Well, today the day has arrived, and it has already been made known: the name of the festival is Escumostra. From this October onwards, we will go to Escumostra to taste sparkling wines, which could be Corpinnat, Cava, Clàssic Penedès, or others that are not protected under any name.

With the name, the festival will be able to include wineries not affiliated with the DO Cava for the first time. At a time of changes in Penedès, the mayor of Sant Sadurní wanted to respond to the conditions that the producing wineries not affiliated with the DO Cava had set to be able to be at the festival. "We want them all to be there, because otherwise, we would not reflect the richness of the producing territory", stated the mayor when he announced that they were looking for a new name last April. Two months later, Escumostra, a mixture of the words escumós and mostra, is the winner.

A step towards normalization

, is the winner.

A step towards normalizationFor their part, the president of Clàssic Penedès, Josep Maria Albet i Noya, opined, seriously, that he believes the best name should be Escum-ostra: Sant Sadurní d'Anoia could ally itself with the mussel farmers of the Ebro Delta, and "this way, oysters and Penedès sparkling wines could be promoted." Furthermore, Albet i Noya states that, in this way, "the glamour of the festival would be raised a few notches, which is always good."

To conclude, the name change marks a new era for Penedès. More than ever, the sector is concerned about the future of sparkling wines, at a time when there is a surplus of grapesMore than ever, the sector is concerned about the future of sparkling wines, at a time when there is a surplus of grapes
