Alert in various counties tomorrow for a spell of showers and storms

BarcelonaCalm and sun have dominated this Monday in most regions, with only afternoon showers concentrated in the Pyrenees and in the north of the Girona regions. Maximum temperatures ranged between 22 °C and 26 °C in many cases, and up to 27 °C in the Ebro basin. A very quiet start to the week that will not continue, as from this Tuesday instability will clearly increase again.

The low-pressure system from the western Iberian Peninsula will send us a new unstable line that, along with cold air at altitude, will cause a new batch of irregular showers and thunderstorms that can fall in practically any location during the afternoon – also on the coast –, locally with strong intensity and hail. And in the coming days, showers will be repeated in various regions, especially in the northeast and the Pyrenees. Temperatures will begin to drop, and by mid-week the cooling will be noticeable, with values below what would be expected for this time of year.

Tuesday: showers and storms

Tuesday morning will still be calm, with plenty of sun, morning fog, and a bit of tramuntana wind in the north of Alt Empordà and Roussillon. But by mid-morning, clouds will start to grow in mountainous areas, and from midday onwards and during the afternoon, a spell of showers and thunderstorms will arrive. They will start mainly in parts of the pre-coastal area, the Pyrenees, and the interior, and although they will be irregular, they will sweep across a large part of the territory from west to east and will also reach the coast.

Some showers can be heavy and leave more than 20 l/m² in just half an hour. In addition, hail or some hail can occur, with intense gusts of wind at the time of the storm. For this reason, Meteocat has activated the alert for intense rain in several counties.

Showers will also fall in the Ports area and in the regions of Castelló, and more sparsely in the interior of Valencia and in some places in the Balearic Islands. All this with temperatures that will begin to drop, especially after it rains. Many highs will still move between 19 °C and 24 °C, even a little higher in the south and in Ponent, but in the afternoon it will clearly cool down once it rains.

Cooling and more showers

In the coming days, the instability typical of spring will persist, with showers and thunderstorms that will repeat in various regions, especially during the afternoon. The most likely are expected in regions of Girona, Barcelona, and the Pyrenees.

All this with temperatures that will be dropping and will remain very subdued, below average. Mid-week, values more typical of early April than mid-May are expected.
