BarcelonaIn one week, two female workers at Brians 2 prison have reported having suffered sexual harassment by two inmates. As reported by the CSIF union, the incidents occurred on July 14 and 19 at the same Sant Esteve Sesrovires penitentiary.

According to ARA, a prison facilitator reported that on July 14, an inmate sat next to her and began touching his genitals. Shortly after, he began masturbating. This inmate is in prison for harassment.

Five days later, on July 19, a female officer was closing the inmates into their cells, but a male prisoner blocked the door. He did so to ask the female officer to come closer and lured her into the cell under false pretexts. Once inside, he showed her his genitals. This inmate is in prison for sexual assault.

The two inmates have already faced regulatory consequences and are sanctioned. In addition, both workers have filed a complaint with the on-call court for two offenses of exhibitionism. Sources from the Department of Justice assure that these cases are always reported and the process is facilitated.

Prison unions denounce an increase in these situations in prisons. The Marea Blava association cites data from the Department of Justice and criticizes the fact that in three years, sexual assaults on workers during the first half of the year have increased from eight in 2023 to 15 in 2025. However, the regional ministry points out that there was no reliable accounting system until last year, and that since last year. Specifically, they state that in 2024 it closed with a ratio of 8.4 sexual assaults per 1,000 inmates and so far in 2025 this ratio stands at 6.8.

Criticism

The Justice Department maintains that it is "vigilant" about these "intolerable" assaults and that all cases are being "exhaustively" monitored. "The administration's passivity is unacceptable," the CSIF emphasizes, calling for action within the department. Marea Azul criticizes the fact that on May 26, the Parliament's Equality Committee voted against preparing a study on the increase in sexual assaults against public employees in prisons, and focuses its criticism on the PSC, ERC, Junts, Comuns, and the CUP for voting against it.
