BarcelonaThe Mossos d'Esquadra are investigating the death of an inmate at the Quatre Camins prison, allegedly at the hands of his cellmate. The events took place tonight and, as ARA has learned, both inmates were in the department for sanctioned prisoners and the victim reportedly died of asphyxiation after being beaten. In a statement, the Department of Justice highlighted that the two inmates had no history of incompatibility. It also explained that the assault was carried out without a bladed weapon, that the center's professionals activated the corresponding action protocols, and that they intervened immediately. Neither of the two inmates was serving a sentence for violent crimes and they were not considered dangerous, according to sources consulted by this newspaper.

Prison sources explain that the alleged attacker had only been at Quatre Camins for three months after being transferred from the Mas d'Enric prison. They also detail that the inmate already had a history of causing incidents, which is why he had a classification of "special monitoring" within the center. The same sources explain that it was the inmates in the neighboring cell who raised the alarm about the fight.

Now the Mossos and the prison services have initiated the corresponding actions to clarify the circumstances of the events. The investigation and the autopsy will determine the origin and circumstances of the incident. The center's management is in contact with the victim's relatives and the support provided for in such cases is being offered.

Prisons at 95%

The death of the inmate occurred the same week that, as reported by ARA, it was revealed that Catalan prisons are at 95% capacity. A situation that, according to various professionals, is causing an increase in tension in centers where the lack of free cells is leading, in some cases, to having to place inmates who have committed different crimes and who are not of the same religion in the same cell. Catalan prison workers have also explained that there have been situations in which inmates have had to serve sanctions in the infirmary due to a lack of space. Penitentiary sources claim that Quatre Camins is experiencing "the overcrowding in prisons with more intensity than any other" and report that there are about forty cells with bedbugs.
