How many tenants and owners are there among the voters of each party? Electoral radiography of housing

One of the reasons that have led the Spanish government to call early elections on November 29 has been the 'no' to the housing decrees from Junts, the PP, and Vox. Political parties have different positions on the housing crisis, and also different electorates. They have different percentages of tenants and homeowners among their voters, for example, and this can condition their point of view on the housing crisis.

The Spanish government's decrees, made amidst popular pressure following the eviction of Maricarmen Abascal, impose measures such as the extraordinary two-year extension for contracts ending before December 31, 2028, the cap on room rental prices, and the prohibition of evicting vulnerable people without a residential alternative. Both texts commit to protecting tenants. That is why it is striking, for example, that according to recent barometers from the Center for Opinion Studies (CEO), 42% of Vox's electorate are tenants, the highest percentage among all political parties in Parliament. In fact, as can be observed in the following graph, Vox is the party with the smallest percentage of voters who own a paid-off home, without mortgages (21%).

The PP is also one of the political forces that voted against the decree and that have a significant fraction of voters who live in rented accommodation –up to 31%, just below the CUP–. Nevertheless, unlike Vox, the PP has nearly 20% more voters with properties without a mortgage.

The political decisions of Junts regarding the housing decrees seem more in tune with the characteristics of its electorate: 52% of its voters have a property already paid off, 20% are owners with a mortgage and only 14% are tenants, the lowest figure on the entire list. Furthermore, after Aliança Catalana (15%), Junts and the CUP are the parties with a higher percentage of the electorate (14%) that lives in inherited houses or houses ceded by family members.

Left-wing electorate

For its part, the PSC, in favor of the housing decrees, has a percentage of renters (22%) below that of the PP and Vox, and a significant bulk of voters with properties without a mortgage (46%) or with mortgaged properties (23%). A similar situation to that of ERC, with 42% of owners without a mortgage, 25% of owners with a mortgage, 20% of renters, and 13% of voters with family homes or ceded properties.

The case of Comuns is more distributed. As the graph shows, voters with properties vary between 30% and 35%, and renters decrease to 25%. CUP voters are those who have the fewest properties with a mortgage (17%) and the second highest percentage of renters (32%), but also a significant portion (37%) of owners without a mortgage.
