The United States has “permanently banned” the fiscal inspection of past tax returns of President Trump, his family, his companies, and his associates. Trump filed a lawsuit against the American treasury because he considered himself persecuted, and now he has withdrawn the complaint in exchange for this fiscal immunity and a multi-million dollar compensation fund that could also benefit attackers of the Capitol on January 6, 2021.

If you haven’t been outraged enough, here’s dessert: the agreement, which includes apologies to the president, has been signed by Todd Blanche, acting attorney general, who was Trump’s lawyer when he was fighting the Justice Department during Biden’s term.

It is evident that the United States is no longer what it used to be, and that it will celebrate its 250th anniversary with the most shameful president in its history. 50 years ago, a president resigned because he was caught lying. The lowering of the ethical bar has been considerable.

I was going to write that I don’t know how Americans let it happen, but it seems to me that we are not in a position to give many lessons: they laugh in our faces and it costs us more and more to react every day, whether we talk about corruption or the daily humiliation of Rodalies, which could have led to several serious disturbances throughout the country and, instead, we face it with our heads down.

I suppose we are busy with our own lives, that we have been made owners of something we do not want to put at risk, and that we will always have the consolation of football and series, but this indecent display of presidential arbitrariness in the country that boasted of saying that “the king is the law” is disgusting and sad, very sad.
