BarcelonaThe Nameless, one of the most celebrated titles in Catalan cinema and the story that launched Jaume Balagueró's prolific career, is making the leap to the small screen. Pau Freixas and Pol Cortecans have adapted Ramsey Campbell's novel to give it a new life on television, and the result is a miniseries that moves more in the realm of thriller psychological and fantastic than the horror genre, as was the case in the 1999 film. The countless (the production was filmed in Catalonia but is in Spanish) arrives this Thursday on Movistar Plus+ and consists of six episodes.

Miren Ibarguren, known above all for her comedic side, takes over from Emma Vilarasau, the star of Balagueró's film, in the role of Claudia, a mother and doctor marked by tragedy. Years after becoming a widow, she suffered the disappearance of her daughter Ángela, who at age 8 was kidnapped by a religious fanatic convinced that the girl had powers. Years later, with her life already rebuilt and having come to terms with the death of the child, Claudia receives a call from someone claiming to be Ángela, asking for her help. Convinced that her daughter is still alive, the doctor will ally herself with the police officer who investigated the girl's disappearance, a man tortured by guilt and practically living on the streets. The third wheel in the story is Laura, a journalist who firmly believes that, before disappearing, Angela resurrected her.

Beyond the main trio, The countless It also features Pablo Derqui, Ana Torrent, Susi Sánchez, and Eva Santolaria.

A Mother's Faith

In The countless The plot moves between two worlds: the esoteric or fantastic and the more earthly. "There's a part of the series that touches a lot on faith and what each person believes in when they don't achieve the life they want," explains Ibarguren, who makes his drama debut with this miniseries. The irrational beliefs of human beings are, in fact, one of the themes that most interested Pau Freixas in Campbell's story. "The combination of the original novel, Pol's [Cortecans'] soul, and mine has ended up creating a thriller which appeals much more to mystery and emotionality than to terror. Through a mother searching for her daughter, we talk about faith, beliefs, and a world in which we question whether miracles exist or not," explains the Catalan screenwriter.

"We present the viewer with situations in which there are always two possible answers. Is the girl alive or dead? Did he resurrect Laura or not? Are there powers or aren't there? It's the binomial between faith and reality. We always move on the threshold of plausibility, which is sometimes more frightening," explains Cortecans.
