The Spanish government initiates the procedure to disable Holaluz and transfer its clients
The reasons that have motivated the ministry's decision for the Ecological Transition are unknown
BarcelonaThe Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge has initiated an administrative procedure to extinguish the authorization of the Catalan company Holaluz as an electricity marketer, as it has been considered that the company has failed to meet the obligations required for the exercise of this activity. In parallel, the ministry has also initiated the procedure for the transfer of the company's clients to a reference marketer, according to what is reported in the Official State Gazette (BOE) of this Saturday. Department sources have confirmed to the Efe agency the opening of the file, although they have not specified the reasons for now.
The Director General of Energy and Mines Policy adopted the resolution on July 16 and opens a period of ten business days, which begins this Sunday, for the company to submit any allegations it deems appropriate. The marketer, which is listed on BME Growth, reduced its losses by 29.5% in 2025, to 22.2 million euros, while its revenues fell by 41%, from 271 million in 2024 to 158.9 million euros. The company attributes this performance in the fiscal year to the final phase of the judicial approval process for its financial restructuring plan and to the subsequent disbursement of the convertible loan, following the entry of the investment fund Icosium as the main shareholder.
The company closed 2025 with 167 employees, compared to 292 in the previous year, representing a 42.8% reduction in staff, and with approximately 221,000 active contracts in Spain.
The company also announced in April its return to the natural gas marketing business, from which it exited in September 2022 as a consequence of the price escalation caused by the war in Ukraine. Holaluz justified the recovery of this service by the demand from its clients to have a joint electricity and natural gas offering managed from a single platform.
