Madrid has more companies that change their headquarters to other regions than Catalonia
Despite this, the balance in Madrid is positive because more companies arrive than leave, and the Catalan balance is negative
BarcelonaMore companies leave the Madrid region than any other. This data is derived from the latest statistics of the Association of Registrars, relating to the first quarter of 2021: 401 companies moved their registered office away from Madrid, a figure that far exceeds the 254 Catalan companies that moved their headquarters.
Despite this, the Madrid region has a positive balance. That is, more companies move to Madrid than leave Madrid. Thus, during the first quarter 401 companies left Madrid, but 498 moved there from other regions: a positive balance of 97. In the case of Catalonia, 254 left and only 175 came from other regions: a negative balance of 79 companies.
If we analyse where the companies that change communities end up, Madrid is the one that receives the most Catalan businesses. Of the 254 Catalan companies that changed their headquarters, 124 went to Madrid. For its part, Catalonia is also the first destination for companies leaving Madrid: 81 of the 401 companies that left moved to the Catalan capital. However, the destination of Madrid companies is much more distributed among all communities, while in the case of those which leave Catalonia Madrid receives a large part.
More insolvencies in Madrid
The registry statistics also includes insolvencies that have occurred during the first quarter of the year. Madrid exceeds Catalonia in companies that have filed for bankruptcy and, moreover, insolvencies have risen more. Specifically, 279 Madrid companies went into insolvency (19.7% more than the first quarter of last year). In Catalonia 257 companies started insolvency proceedings (5.3% more than a year earlier). In Spain as a whole, 1,154 companies filed for bankruptcy, 15.3% more than a year ago.
In relation to the constitution of new companies, Madrid continues to be the leading region, with 2,550 during the first quarter, 46% more than the same quarter in 2020, while in Catalonia 2,015 were constituted, almost 70% more than a year ago.
