BarcelonaThe Barça-Betis match on Sunday was supposed to be a fantastic end-of-season party at the Camp Nou. The team, already champions, was playing their last match at the stadium, where they were set to achieve their 19th victory, thus completing a perfect home season. Several players received the award accrediting them as members of the competition's ideal eleven. And the main event was the farewell of Robert Lewandowski, who was saying goodbye with full honors after four years wearing the blaugrana. Nothing suggested that anything could go wrong, until this morning Fermín López visited the blaugrana medical center.

The news couldn't be worse for the midfielder from El Campillo, who has been diagnosed by doctors with a fracture in the fifth metatarsal of his right foot. The footballer was substituted at half-time, a change that was interpreted at the time as a rotation by Flick to give minutes to a teammate. The reality is that he had felt discomfort. At that moment, alarms were already ringing, and this Monday it has been confirmed that he will have to go under the knife. Or, in other words, he will miss the World Cup in Mexico, the United States, and Canada, as reported by Catalunya Ràdio and confirmed by ARA.

In the statement, Barça has not specified the recovery time, but the need for surgery –conservative treatment could not be performed– prolongs the recovery process, which in these cases is between two and three months. Therefore, he will not make it to the World Cup, which begins in mid-June. A very significant loss for Luís de la Fuente, who loses a key attacking player. And that's because Fermín was in great footballing form.
