A civil guard kills his ex-partner, also an agent, at the Llanes barracks, in Asturias

BarcelonaA Civil Guard agent shot and killed his ex-partner, also an agent, at the barracks of the armed institute in Llanes (Asturias). The man, who had also been seriously injured when the victim's colleagues tried to prevent the assault by making him retreat, also died. The events took place shortly before 1:30 p.m., when the alleged perpetrator, assigned to the Zamora command, entered the Llanes facilities through a secondary door, as he had worked there before and was familiar with the premises. Once inside, he shot his ex-partner, with whom he had three children – an 18-year-old and 14-year-old twins.
Sources close to the investigation have indicated to Efe that the man – who had initially been detained – sought out his ex-partner with the intention of shooting her. A lieutenant from the corps pursued him, but the assailant also shot him. Meanwhile, a sergeant tried to repel the assault and the escape and shot at the alleged killer, who was very seriously injured. After being attended to by emergency services, he died. In the exchange of fire, a lieutenant was seriously injured by a gunshot wound to the leg.
As the same sources explained to Efe, the agent was registered in the VioGén system following domestic violence complaints. Furthermore, sources close to the investigation indicated that the civil guard had open files for gender-based violence and that, precisely, he had received a very serious disciplinary sanction a few days ago. For this reason, he no longer had his service weapon. According to the same sources, he would have stolen either from the lockers or snatched from a colleague a weapon to kill his ex-partner.
The Spanish government's delegation against gender violence has already announced that it is investigating the case as a possible case of gender-based violence. If the gender-based nature of the murder is confirmed, it would be the 34th woman killed by gender violence since the beginning of the year; 1,375 since 2003.
