BarcelonaA few weeks ago it was Gabriel Rufián and Irene Montero who presented themselves as a tandem in Barcelona for November 29th, and this Saturday Ada Colau's Broad Front did so. At the launch in Catalonia of the candidacy headed by the former mayor of Barcelona, the main visible figures were present: Colau, the number two for Barcelona, Ernest Urtasun, and also the number one for Madrid, Emilio Delgado. From La Sagrera, they wanted their main message to be directed at the upper classes of the State and Colau herself warned that if the Broad Front reaches the Spanish government it will "fry" the "posh" people with taxes. In fact, she addressed herself directly to the number two of the PP candidacy for November 29th, Cayetana Álvarez de Toledo. "Lady Marchioness Cayetana, we will raise taxes significantly for you and your posh friends," she said at the event reported by the ACN.

From a full plaza in the Jardins d'Elx in La Sagrera, Colau focused her message on what will be one of the axes of her campaign: a tax system that burdens the wealth of the upper classes —this week she once again proposed the tax the rich— as well as measures to end speculation in the housing sector, with the expropriation of apartments from vulture funds as one of the measures. In this sense, Colau has called for the mobilization of the left-wing electorate to configure a "much braver" progressive government. Although the formations that make up the Broad Front are part of the current Spanish government, Colau has criticized in recent weeks that the executive has not managed to stop the housing crisis and, even, had advocated for Sumar to break the coalition with the PSOE.

Words that were not well received by various sectors of this space to the left of the socialists. This Saturday, however, Urtasun took advantage of the event in Barcelona to reproach the PSOE precisely for boasting about measures promoted from within the coalition government that depend on Sumar's ministries. For this reason, he has requested a "huge" result for the Broad Front because they are the guarantee, he said, of the "social engine of Spain".

The example of Lula

Demoscopy does not forecast a good result for the Broad Front; rather, they would suffer a decline compared to 2023. For this reason, Colau has asked for the left to mobilize to "turn the polls around" and cited the result of Lula da Silva in Brazil as an example—an example to which the PSOE has also appealed this weekend—. "Just as in Brazil the polls said that Lula would not win, in a single week popular mobilization demonstrated that the final word belongs to the people, the public, the neighborhoods, and the working social majority," maintained the former mayor of Barcelona. The candidate even put numbers to the goal they aspire to achieve: according to her, the Broad Front is now hovering at 8% of voting intention and the coalition has set a goal of reaching 10% to double the parliamentary representation they currently hold and take seats away from Vox.
