Enric and Meghan return to the United Kingdom: victory or defeat for the Dukes of Sussex?
Six years after fleeing to the United States, they are now returning. We analyze all the keys to their imminent move
BarcelonaThey left for the United States six years ago because they could not stand the media pressure or the lack of freedom to which they were subjected in the United Kingdom for being members of the British royal family. On the other side of the Atlantic, for all these years, they have dedicated themselves solely to making their fame even bigger and more polarized through all sorts of pop consumer products such as books or documentaries whose sole interest was the attacks they included against the British royal family. Now, with all this inertia of social hatred they have built up in the United Kingdom from a distance, they will return to live in the country, even though when they were loved and respected there they said it was unbearable for them. Below, we analyze the nonsensical saga that Prince Harry and his wife, Meghan Markle, want us to swallow.
On Wednesday, it emerged through the Daily Telegraph and The Sun that Lady Di's youngest son and his wife would return to live in the United Kingdom six years after leaving on bad terms, quarreling with the monarchy that has given them everything they have. Especially him. Very quickly, the BBC confirmed the news, which means that this royal information is a fact. What has served to confirm this is that their two children – the ones they wanted to protect at all costs with their escape... – have already been enrolled in a school on the outskirts of London, an area where they are expected to settle. To top it off, on Friday, journalist Bronte Coy explained on BBC Radio 4 that upon their return to the United Kingdom, Meghan Markle will resume her acting career with an English project that is currently "top secret".
Without financial warmth
The tabloids' scoop about the return already explained that the place where they are expected to live will be a private residence. A very relevant piece of information for both sides of this made in Windsor conflict, as it doesn't make either of them look bad. It doesn't identify the former as losers unable to live without the protection of public money, nor does it make the latter look like fools who are giving well-being to two professionally failed individuals who have only lived by making the country's main institution and – in the minds of many Britons – the country in general look bad.
This information comes shortly after Harry visited his father in early July. When he and Markle eagerly left the United Kingdom, Queen Elizabeth II was governing the house; thankfully, she is dead and has been spared all this show. Now, the one in charge – presumably... – is King Charles III, who perhaps to prevent his reign from being even more erased from history than it already is by the long shadow of his unequalled mother and his paedophile brother, has decided to facilitate this return as much as possible so that it is as unbelligerent as possible.
Grandpa Charles
When Harry and Charles last saw each other, Harry brought with him his two children, Archie and Lilibeth – aged 7 and 5, respectively – whom the English monarch practically did not know, as the last time they had seen each other was in 2022. It should be noted that, moreover, the last time they had all seen each other was for the Queen's jubilee. That is to say, not by their own will but because the occasion prompted it. The next meeting was equally devoid of affective intention, as it was during the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II, that same year.
The BBC says that the King views this move favorably because he will be able to enjoy these grandchildren more, which is quite curious, especially if we consider how little he and Camilla are seen with the grandchildren they have in the country and who will inherit the institution. However, this approach to the news based on affections is not surprising either, as it is a way of framing it within the strictly family context and completely separating it from the institutional and political context, in which it could be truly controversial. Considering the circumstances in which they have been seen in the last six years, this current joy about being neighbors.
The British public service also assures that the heir to the throne, William, and the institution's truly beloved figure, Kate Middleton, have already been informed of the return. It should be noted that, nowadays, the Prince of Wales and his brother do not maintain any kind of relationship. The betrayal committed by leaving the institution without looking back and, afterwards, publicly denigrating it to make money has marked a before and after in the relationship between the brothers, as it has greatly complicated William's path to the throne, who has been avoiding family miseries –without practically starring in any himself– since he was a child. After having weathered the storm of the Sussexes' departure in 2020, this return, in the face of which they must remain silent so as not to make the situation even bigger, must have been worse for them than a tack sandwich at teatime.
Why?
And faced with this move the big question is: Why are they returning? If we make a logical analysis of the facts, it is difficult to answer. Enric said that in the United Kingdom the sensationalist press had turned his wife's life "into a real ordeal." If we take into account that this same press won the case in court at the beginning of July, when he lost a case against the Daily Mail and the Mail on Sunday, for which he will have to pay millions of pounds – it is not yet known how many, but it could be many – in compensation to the media group, everything is even less normal. It cannot be understood where he gets the desire to return to a country where he has been turned his back on by the people, the justice system, the monarchical institution and the family, and where the press is waiting to once again turn Meghan Markle's life into an alleged "ordeal".
Since it makes no sense, perhaps the problem is ours, that we analyze it from honesty. Perhaps everything was planned like this from the beginning. Perhaps the plan was to exaggerate a lot when leaving the United Kingdom – this has been quite evident – to go to the Americas to hoard a lot of dollars – with Netflix they have billed about 100 million, with Spotify about 20 and he with the memoirs he published about 25 more – and then return home with a full purse to live a gifted life like before, but without any social commitment because they no longer live off the public purse. Truly, a masterstroke.
In installments
It cannot be ruled out that, in addition to all this, we are also facing a soft landing to reintegrate into public life in the United Kingdom. Perhaps initially with the acts of their organizations and, in the long run, if everything goes as planned, from within the royal household. This will perhaps be the most questionable thing, as it will depend on who is in charge at that time. Society would buy that Charles would forgive them and timidly open the door to some acts. He can afford that. William and Catherine, no. While we analyze the present, the spin doctors of the royal households always work in the long term. They are not like politicians who only think in four-year periods. They are permanent. They can have plans decades in advance.
Some opine that the move to the United Kingdom is not an attempt to settle in the country again permanently because they have not sold their millionaire mansion in Montecito. If we are facing a soft landing the timings are important. It's normal they keep it a while longer. There's no need to confess all intentions on the first day. Besides, perhaps they won't sell it because there's also the option that if the plan to return to their country of origin to live off the royalties of power doesn't go well, they can easily return to California. Of course, with their notebook full of new miseries of the Windsors to continue victimizing themselves on streaming for the highest bidder. All options are on the table. All except working, of course.
