Giuliano Lombardo, owner of the Tramonti restaurant in Barcelona, dies

BarcelonaGiuliano Lombardo, the owner of the Tramonti restaurant in Barcelona (Avenida Diagonal, 501), has passed away at the age of 75, as the family was informed via the restaurant's Instagram account with a poignant message: "Today Giuliano will reunite with his brother Franco in heaven." They also announced that the restaurant will officially close on December 31st. The restaurant had been searching for a successor for some time. as Lombardo himself explained on the ARA Comemos.

Opened in 1980 and considered the city's first Italian restaurant, it had been operating with good Italian cuisine as its flagship. Sadly, the restaurant's chef, Franco Lombardo, passed away last April. The Lombardo brothers arrived in Barcelona in 1973 and worked together at the Sausolito pub-restaurant, where the comedian Eugenio performed. "It was wonderful because we served pizzas and pasta dishes, and depending on which door you walked through, it would transform into either a pub or a restaurant," Giuliano Lombardo recalled a few months ago. Over the years, the business was sold, and the two brothers remained at the premises on Avenida Diagonal, which they named Tramonti. "There weren't any Italian restaurants in Barcelona, and it wasn't easy to buy Italian products because imports were subject to quotas," Giuliano explained.

One of the interesting things about Tramonti is that Jaume Plensa had a dish named after him. A light pasta dish that was on the menu for fifteen years. "The artist Jaume Plensa designed the menu for us, and in return, we dedicated a dish to him that bears his name," explained Giuliano. Antoni Tàpies also used to eat there, so they had paintings by him.
