Last winds today: the anticyclone is already knocking on the door
In the coming days we will experience the longest period of calm since the beginning of the year
BarcelonaThe episode of strong winds in the last few hours, driven by the storm Peter The strong winds have been felt in many regions, with gusts exceeding 100 km/h in the far reaches of the country and at high altitudes. In the rest of central and southern Spain, and in the Ponent region, many gusts have been recorded between 60 and 80 km/h, and some incidents have occurred, mostly in Barcelona and the Camp de Tarragona area (you will find the most significant wind data at the end of this report). Strong westerly and northwesterly winds will persist until midday today in the southern half of the country – especially between the Camp de Tarragona, the Terres de l'Ebre, and inland Castellón – in the Pyrenees and Pre-Pyrenees, and across much of the Costa Brava and northern Catalonia. The situation will improve significantly this afternoon, and by the weekend the wind will completely subside with the arrival of the high-pressure system. We can expect days of sunshine and absolute calm, like we haven't had for many weeks, and we will begin the longest period of calm weather so far in 2026, which will put an end to the string of storms of the last two months.
Friday: the weather will improve
Today, strong winds will continue to blow in the far reaches of the country until midday, but will clearly subside in the afternoon, leaving only a few intense gusts in northern Empordà, the Pyrenees peaks, Alt Empordà, and some areas along the Ebro River. The strong winds will no longer be a major concern and will gradually move towards the rest of the country, with no further strong gusts expected in the Barcelona area or the western part of Catalonia. In fact, areas such as the northeast have remained unaffected by this weather event. The Catalan Meteorological Service (Meteocat) has several regions under a strong wind warning until midday, with many gusts exceeding 70 or 80 km/h, but locally gusts may still surpass 100 km/h.
Light showers are still expected on the northern slopes of the Pyrenees during the morning, with snow at 1,000 meters. However, the precipitation will clear up in the afternoon, although the sky will remain overcast in this area.
Elsewhere, the sky will be hazy with high, thin clouds, and may even become more overcast or snowy in the northern half during the afternoon, without any major consequences. It will be colder early in the morning, with frost in the Pyrenees and Pre-Pyrenees and freezing conditions with blizzards in the high mountains. However, maximum temperatures will rise slightly, with many reaching between 13°C and 18°C.
A radiant weekend to make the most of
After the storm PeterThe anticyclone will finally take hold starting this weekend. We can expect sunny and calm days to enjoy, with no wind anywhere and morning fog. Only during the first part of Saturday will a moderate tramontana wind blow in the Alt Empordà region, which will eventually disappear in the afternoon. There will also be a temperature contrast between the cold nights and the mild middays, as maximum temperatures will rise and it will feel almost spring-like. Thermometers will soar in mountainous areas and there will be a marked temperature inversion, with colder mornings at lower elevations than at higher elevations. In fact, there will be clearly positive temperatures in the high mountains, which will cause the large amount of snow in the Pyrenees to melt. It will be fantastic days on the ski slopes, but be very careful if you are skiing independently, as the risk of avalanches may increase due to the rising temperatures.
