BarcelonaThe Health Commission was heated this Thursday in the Catalan Parliament. The Catalan parliament has summoned Health Minister Olga Pané to explain the current status of access to abortion in Catalonia and to assess the handling of the flu epidemic last winter. Pané presented the data, and during question time, Vox MP María Elisa García Fuster harshly criticized the right of pregnant women to terminate their pregnancies if they so wish, citing implausible arguments. "I come from hospitals where I've seen women having abortions. I've seen how the baby runs away and how it tries to defend itself and puts its hands out to try to stop the needle from sticking in," she stated during her speech.

Before taking office as a member of parliament last term, García Fuster worked as an anesthesiologist at Bellvitge Hospital, a center that does not have pediatric or obstetric services and does not perform abortions. Surgical abortions are usually performed with sedation or local anesthesia because it allows for better pain control after the procedure. However, those responsible for gynecology and obstetrics are the only professionals who can perform uterine aspiration or curettage to terminate a patient's pregnancy. García Fuster declared that this right is "a disgrace" that "reflects the decline of society."

She has also accused the PSC, ERC and Comunes of encouraging women to exercise their right: "They encourage ending the life of human beings in their mother's womb, but then they are willing to kill themselves so as not to disturb four ducks in the Ricarda lagoon, and the expansion of the airport.

Only six conscientious objectors

Pané explained that the department is aware of six healthcare professionals who are conscientious objectors to performing voluntary abortions (VAPs) registered in the registry that went into operation last year. According to the minister, the right to abortion is being exercised "widely" and she asserted that she is not aware of any woman being left out "due to any access issues." In 2023, 22,307 voluntary abortions were registered in Catalonia, almost 2% more than the previous year, and 84% were publicly funded.
