BarcelonaThe ghost stations of the subway They will no longer be ghost stations, or at least the general public will be able to discover them. Barcelona Metropolitan Transport (TMB) will open the "ghost stations" of Gaudí and Correos as part of the metro's centenary events. The Gaudí station, located between Sant Pau - Dos de Maig and Sagrada Família (L5), was built in 1968 but never opened for business, while the Correos station operated from 1934 to 1972. Until now, both were closed.
These guided tours are part of a total of eight spaces usually closed to the public that will be temporarily open to visitors, such as the old Urquinaona spiral staircase and the Mercat Nou substation. The operator has scheduled these activities, which are free, throughout September, October, and November. Advance registration is required, and TMB will offer more than 5,000 spaces.
The Gaudí station will be open on October 4, 5, 25, and 26, between 9:30 a.m. and 2:00 p.m., and has 720 spaces. As for Correos station, visits will take place on October 20, 21, and 22 and November 17, 18, and 19, with the added benefit of being early in the morning (225 spaces). Access must be made when there are no trains running and the station can be reached via the tracks from Jaume I station (L4). TMB CEO Xavier Flores emphasized that the early morning opening makes it "more attractive."
The mechanical workshops
Meanwhile, users will also be able to access the inner workings of the metro's mechanical workshops. Flores explained that they will be able to see "the newest and the oldest workshop." The most modern one is located in the Zona Franca, and its first predecessor is in Santa Eulalia. It dates back to 1922, serves Line 1, and is considered a protected monument as a cultural asset of local interest in Hospitalet de Llobregat. The guided tour also includes a visit to the metro control center in La Sagrera and the driving simulator room in Plaça Catalunya.
Flores explained that all of this is part of the initiative. We opened the subway, because "these hundred years of the metro are a success story": "A success shared by the million and a half people who use us every day," he asserted. Registration will open on September 9th, starting at 10:00 a.m., to visit the eight spaces.
