Commuter rail will continue with alternative service on 11 lines this Tuesday
Since the weekend, only the Figueres-Portbou section of the R11 has been reopened.
BarcelonaThe "normal" train service promised by the government on Monday will not be restored this Tuesday either. As confirmed this afternoon by Renfe's spokesperson in Catalonia, Antonio Carmona, commuter rail services for Tuesday will be exactly the same as those offered on Monday. "We talk about certainties, and the certainty is that tomorrow [Tuesday] we will begin service with the same train offering as today," Carmona admitted in a statement to the media at Sants station. Thus, on Tuesday, up to eleven commuter rail lines will still be operating with alternative bus service on some sections. Specifically, lines R1, RG1, R3, R4, RL4, R7, R8, R13, R14, R15, and RT1 will continue to be affected. However, only five lines will offer full train service: R2 North, R2 South, R11, R16, and R17.
In fact, the only change compared to the situation this weekend has been that train service on the section of the R11 line between Figueres and Portbou was restored early Monday morning. Therefore, on Tuesday, passengers on this line will be able to travel the entire route from Barcelona to Portbou.
130 km/h with reduced speed
Although the vast majority of commuter rail lines continue to be affected after two weeks of rail chaos, Carmona insisted that "the other certainty" is that "the mobility of all commuter rail passengers in Catalonia is also guaranteed, whether by rail or through alternative road services." Therefore, a system of 150 buses and 700 information officers deployed throughout the region will continue operating this Tuesday. Regarding the sections where train speeds remain restricted—179 sections that imply speed restrictions across 130 kilometers of the rail network—Carmona maintained that "the traffic safety system is very robust." In this regard, the spokesperson explained that "the moment a train driver detects any potential anomaly, a temporary speed restriction must be established," and until an Adif technician checks the condition of that point and, if necessary, resolves the issue, the train cannot return to its normal speed.
