BarcelonaA ship with about 270 people on board has sunk this Sunday off the coast of northern Cyprus, while a rescue operation led by the Turkish Cypriot coast guard is ongoing, local authorities have reported, facing a situation they describe as "serious". According to the newspaper Kıbrıs, the vessel could be a catamaran, which began to take on water about four miles from the coast.

While some media outlets claim the ship has capsized, the Minister of Transport of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, Erhan Arikli, told the press that the vessel was about to sink off the coast of the New Port of Girne (Kyrenia, in Greek). On the other hand, the mayor of the city of Kyrenia, Murat Senkul, explained to CNN Türk that 159 out of the 258 passengers traveling on board the vessel have been reached.
