The Norwegian Nobel Committee will announce the winner or winners of the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize on Friday, October 9. The announcement will be made starting at 11:00 a.m., local time. This is the only award that is made public in Oslo, the others are announced in Stockholm because they are presented by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences.
Last year, the prize was marked by Donald Trump's pressure on the Nobel committee to award it to him. At the summit between Russia and the United States -known as Trump-Putin summit in Alaska-, the American leader used foreign heads of state to address the Nobel committee and highlight how, allegedly, since the beginning of his term his administration had "put an end to seven wars". In fact, at the United Nations General Assembly podium in 2025, Trump openly claimed that he deserved the prize. "Everyone says that I should receive the Nobel Peace Prize," he asserted at the time.
Ultimately, however, the politician and Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado received the award. According to the Nobel committee, they awarded the prize to Machado "for her tireless work in promoting democratic rights for the people of Venezuela and for her struggle to achieve a fair and peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy".
Peace was the fifth and final category that the creator of the awards, Alfred Nobel, mentioned in his will. According to the committee, the laureates are those individuals who have worked in favor of fraternity between nations, have promoted the abolition or reduction of standing armies, and have held and promoted peace congresses. Regarding the prize money, for 2026 it has been set at 12 million Swedish kronor—about 1 million euros—for each award.
