Each time there is less wind, and that is a problem for the climate / Why does the wind no longer blow as before?
The calming of the wind is a phenomenon with possible consequences for pollution, drought and the energy transition. We talk about it and take a tour of the most interesting science proposals for November

'Fungarium', Katie Scott and Ester Gaya (Símbol, 2020)
Although in Catalonia we are great fans of mushrooms, humans know very little about fungi. In fact, we only know 5% of the millions of fungal species (from 2.2 to 3.8 million) that are estimated to exist on Earth. Fungarium aims to be an introductory guide to the knowledge we have of the Fungi kingdom and its relevance to ecosystems. Intended for a young audience, it is part of the Welcome to the Museum collection, which is characterized by presenting large-format books that simulate a visit to a museum. With a carefully crafted edition, it features descriptions of high rigor and scientific level for each of the species exhibited in its pages. The texts are accompanied by naturalist illustrations of great beauty and detail.
Pioneer
On October 28, 1860, Gulielma Lister was born
Mycologist, botanist and environmentalist, she was an international reference for slime molds. These are multicellular organisms, often microscopic, responsible for the decomposition of dead matter in soils. Throughout her career, Lister collected, documented and illustrated hundreds of specimens. We currently know that slime molds are not fungi, but a group of polyphyletic eukaryotes whose taxonomy is still being researched.
At a glance
It is less windy every time
The stilling is the global reduction of surface wind speed, that is, the one that goes up to 10 m above the Earth's surface. It has been observed since 1970 and especially affects the northern hemisphere.
Agenda
Anniversary of the 'Science Nest' at the Museum of Natural Sciences (Barcelona)
Saturday, November 14th and Sunday, November 15th, free with prior reservation
Under the name 15 years doing science at the Niu, the Niu de Ciència project of the Barcelona Museum of Natural Sciences is celebrating its anniversary. For this reason, it is organizing a very special weekend for education professionals and families with children. Saturday's session will be aimed at teachers and will reflect on how to bring scientific learning to younger children. Sunday, on the other hand, will be a day open to the general public, with workshops, various activities, and a theatrical proposal to enjoy science together. The Niu's vocation has always been to discover the world of natural sciences for children aged 0 to 6, an age group often forgotten in scientific promotion. It does this through exploration, suggestion, and the awakening of the senses. You will find all information regarding the sessions on the museum's website.
'Orbital Gazes' exhibition at CaixaForum Girona (Girona)
Until February 9, 2027, free with prior reservation
The city of Girona hosts this exhibition that, through photographs of Earth taken from space, reflects on the impact of the human footprint on the planet and the importance of preserving it. Walking through the exhibition's interactive installations, we will discover what the ambitious Copernicus and Sentinel space programs are, managed by the European Space Agency (ESA), and how their observation satellites work. But, above all, we will learn how the images captured by these missions over the last ten years are processed, all of great beauty, and how they serve to monitor and evaluate the environmental evolution of the Earth under climate change.
Documentary 'Our new world' (2025)
Available on the CaixaForum+ platform
This documentary offers a hopeful look at the climate emergency, exploring the Earth's capacity for resilience and nature's extraordinary adaptability. By giving voice to real-life experiences from different parts of the planet, Our new world shows how people and animals struggle to survive in ecosystems that are transforming before their very eyes. But it does so by moving away from fatalism, sharing a portrait that explores the potential of the human species to become the planet's essential ally and stop the destruction that threatens us. An exciting story that sheds light on the uncertain future we face.
