Surprise at ANC: Lluís Llach steps aside and Josep Vila is the new president
The handover, agreed upon, will see the singer-songwriter remain in the direction as vice-president
BarcelonaSurprise in capital letters at the helm of the ANC. Lluís Llach is no longer the president of the Catalan National Assembly (ANC). After two years in office, the singer-songwriter has decided to step aside and hand over the presidency to Josep Vila, but he will remain in the entity's leadership to exercise representation. Llach will be the vice-president and Vila, who had been the ANC coordinator in the city of Girona and was now the coordinator of the Political Incidence Commission, will be the new president, in a agreed handover that was formalized this Saturday at the constituent plenary of the new secretariat, held in Igualada.
With the critics who advocated for presenting electoral battle banishedBe that as it may, the fact that the change was now agreed upon is demonstrated by the fact that Vila and Llach were elected in the first vote and it was not necessary to use the reform of the statutes approved by the leadership in this mandate to prevent the election of the four organic positions of the entity from being blocked. This reform, which led to the departure of the remaining leaders of the critical current, establishes that if after two votes, none of the candidates obtain the support of two-thirds of the secretaries, in the third, only an absolute majority is necessary.
With the critics who advocated for presenting electoral battle banished, Vila and Llach were elected at the first opportunity. Vila's candidacy was validated with 39 votes out of 58 cast, exceeding the qualified two-thirds majority required in the first vote. Also ratified, without the need for new votes, were the new secretary, who will be Ariadna Heinz, who was already the third most voted candidate obtaining 1,226 votes, and the treasurer, who will be Blanca Currià.
Far away is the vote from two years ago, when in the entity's most accident-prone assembly, the singer-songwriter needed two plenaries to take control of the organization in a situation that had never happened before and which evidenced internal division. Then, however, those who defended that the ANC should promote a candidacy for the elections to the Parliament presented battle. This time, no. And in just one hour, the four organic positions of the Assembly have been elected.
In this way, the board is renewed almost completely and only Llach remains because the until now vice-president, Nohemí Zafra, the treasurer Jordi Alsina and the secretary Xavi Aibar leave the board. This completes the renewal of the ANC to make it "more agile, simpler and adapted to the new political and social context", as explained by the entity in a statement, which has set itself the objective of "building a social majority in favor of independence".
