BarcelonaFormer Minister of Economy and Finance Jaume Giró leaves Junts due to disagreements with "the party's current orientations." Giró has announced that he will resign "in the next few hours" from both his position on the party's national executive committee and his position as a member of the Catalan Parliament.

"I have made the decision to leave my seat and active politics because I believe that, at this time, I am not in a position to give the party what it expects of me, nor do the party's current orientations coincide with my understanding of the politics that I believe the country needs and needs today," reads the statement with which he announced his resignation on Thursday. Giró also clarified that he had already personally communicated his decision to the president and secretary general of Junts, Carles Puigdemont and Jordi Turull, on Wednesday.

Regarding the context in which he decided to leave the party, he notes: "Catalonia is, for various reasons, at a crucial crossroads, and politics is, all too often, excessively tactical. Party interests are prioritized over those of the country, which makes collaboration between the main forces difficult." Giró explains his decision as a "difficult decision, but at the same time calm and mature," and one that "arises from a personal feeling" that he says he cannot ignore. "I have never been anywhere to warm the seat. And I have, at this point in my life, the privilege of being able to remain faithful to these principles," he adds.

Giró does not explain what he will do from now on. "I don't know if the future will offer me new opportunities to renew my commitment to Catalonia, but I know that this vocation for service remains intact. I feel deeply identified with the values, culture, attitude, and way of doing things that have built the foundations of our nation," the statement adds, also recalling his "unexpected" arrival in politics—previously, he was a director at La Caixa—and his commitment to Catalonia. The statement also adds thanks to the members of Junts for having "allowed him to experience an intense and enriching period."
