The Americans have stripped the king

It was not the evidence that Trump is a lying, crude, egomaniacal president with symptoms of mental incapacity who only looks out for himself and his friends that fundamentally defeated him, but the cost of living. It is what it is.

It has not been, precisely, a virtuous exercise of national dignity but of logical economic survival. Perhaps it is true that in cities like Minneapolis voters have made Trump pay for the raids of the ICE thugs, but in the United States one cannot go into an election with the price of gasoline at its highest in recent times.

It hasn't exactly been the Democratic candidates who have won, but rather it has been the Republicans who have lost, dragged down by a president in free fall. Americans, who 65 years ago were solemnly called upon by their president to ask themselves what they could do for their country, have now realized that the fool they chose was doing nothing for them, except deceiving them with false promises of not declaring wars in distant lands while he filled his pockets.

The first bit of good news, then, is that finally Trump's lies have been defeated by the truth of the facts. And the second is that democracy, that noble, ancient, and battered factory of citizenship, does continue to fulfill its promise of changing power from one hand to another (with the limitations inherent to a supercapitalist system) peacefully. The Americans have stripped the king naked. Whether the Democrats can manage to dress another one who has a project for the majority and is a winner, that is a different matter altogether.
