Som Energia is committed to a transformative energy transition led by citizens.
The cooperative promotes Energy Communities through Som Comunitats, a platform for visibility, support, management and networking of these groups.
Climate change, resource depletion, and extreme pollution represent some of the greatest threats we face today as a global society. Transitioning from fossil fuels to renewable energy is one of the most significant challenges humanity faces in the 21st century. Even greater is the challenge of ensuring this transition is fair and democratic, in a context where large corporations and powerful business groups are already positioning themselves to lead this change: they want to maintain control and ownership of energy production systems and the lucrative business behind them.
Thus, with the aim of achieving a truly sustainable, decentralized, transparent energy system that serves the common good, Energy Communities are emerging from the grassroots, local governments, and small and medium-sized enterprises in the region. And it is when individuals and grassroots organizations unite and cooperate around this objective that the energy transition—towards a 100% renewable system—gains even more momentum.
Energy Communities are groups of diverse stakeholders working towards a 100% renewable, inclusive, collectively owned, and sustainable energy model through democratic social transformation. These groups can consist of individuals, organizations, local public administrations, and small and medium-sized enterprises, primarily organized as cooperatives or associations, to transform their neighborhood, town, city, region, or country. These communities clearly and transparently prioritize social and environmental improvement over economic gain. Furthermore, they are organized in an open and participatory manner to strengthen and empower the community.
Therefore, the goal of an Energy Community is to drive a transformative energy transition within its community. This transition is based on a process in which citizens, through self-organization, lead the decarbonization and denuclearization of the energy system that powers our society. This is a path of energy and social transition and transformation, aiming to achieve, on the one hand, a 100% renewable, distributed, and responsible energy system and, on the other, an active and cohesive society united by democratic values and environmental protection.
To achieve this, these communities are carrying out a series of actions in diverse areas, such as promoting new community-owned renewable energy generation plants, encouraging and implementing energy saving and reduction measures, energy exchange and management, citizen training and mobilization, sustainable mobility and climate control, and mobility that permeates virtually all aspects of our lifestyle.
We are Energy For over a decade, the cooperative has been committed "to a transformative, citizen-led energy transition towards a 100% renewable and decentralized model," as explained in ARA. And one of the most powerful tools for achieving this change is Energy Communities. "[At the cooperative] we are fully committed to supporting the development of new Energy Communities and, for this reason, together with the Catalan cooperatives Som Mobilitat, Tandem Social, and ePlural, we have created Som Comunitats," they added.
We are Communities Som Comunitats is a platform for visibility, support, management, and networking of Energy Communities. It provides access to various key digital tools and resources, as well as the option to contract services offered by cooperatives and social economy enterprises related to the promotion, management, and consolidation of Energy Communities. Furthermore, they develop technological management and governance tools that enable the replication and acceleration of the creation of energy communities, their scalability, and agile management. Currently, more than 70 local energy communities with nearly 2,200 members across the region are part of Som Comunitats.
If you are interested in joining or creating a new Energy Community in your neighborhood, municipality, or region, you can access the Energy Communities map, see what projects are already underway and join them or show interest in receiving information regularly or get in touch to resolve specific questions.
