Biel Mesquida: "For the racist and unsupportive shit of a country that we are ending up with, welcome be the demographic replacement"
The poet and writer inaugurates The Week of the Book in Catalan and has claimed the book as a "tool of salvation of the Catalan language"
Barcelona"Literature serves to say that, for the racist and unsympathetic piece of shit country that we are being left with, demographic replacement is welcome. It's already late!", said Biel Mesquida this Saturday during the inauguration of the 44th Catalan Book Week. The poet and writer, born in Castelló de la Plana in 1947, has spent decades defending freedom in all its nuances, and today his message has also claimed “insurrection”: "I have not come to bring you peace, but struggle; I have not come to bring you well-being, but insurrection. Literature has always been on the front line of humanizing struggles, against the trampling of rights, against ignorance, for wisdom, and for the practice of people's happiness", asserted the poet, who also sang a cappella the first stanza of Bella Ciao.
The winner of the 58th Prize of Honor for Catalan Letters has made a fierce defense of the Catalan language: "In a time of loud cries for the linguistic emergency of Catalan, threatened by the dizzying rise of neo-fascisms of all kinds and conditions that want the Catalan language and culture even more marginalized, residualized to the point of disappearance, the book in Catalan is a tool of national salvation, it is a treasure of intelligence and a vaccine against annihilation", he asserted.
Despite everything, the poet highlighted that there are many people fighting so that the language is not lost: "But, above all, it is the reality of an editorial renaissance brought about by writers, publishers, distributors, booksellers, librarians, magazine editors, promoters and cultural institutions that surround us on all sides", he said.
The poet and writer has shown solidarity with teachers and librarians, has demanded the freedom of Pablo Hasél and has called for actions to guarantee the future of the language: "From the judicial and political offensive that Catalan suffers and the decline of its social use among young people to the marginalization of the language in public service. We need powerful actions and a collective commitment to guarantee the future of Catalan as a backbone of cohesion and welcome. The National Pact for the Language should be a pact of the entire nation. No one has the right to consider that Biel Mesquida does not belong to the Catalan nation by virtue of being a Majorcan writer born in the Valencian Country. If there are no Catalan Countries, there is no Catalonia", he asserted.
