The guilty pleasure you'll see on Netflix during the Christmas holidays (starring Hugh Jackman's girlfriend)
After years of being unavailable anywhere, the romantic comedy 'Younger' has finally arrived on the platform.
BarcelonaIt's light, addictive, and ideal for moments when you need something that won't make your head bob too much. After years out of print, the romantic comedy Younger, created by Darren Star, the mastermind behind other series such as Emily in Paris either Sex and the CityIt has landed on Netflix and in just a few days has already appeared on the list of most-watched shows on the platform in Spain. And that's because Younger It's one of those ideal series to have on hand for any streaming platform: it has seven seasons and episodes that don't exceed half an hour, making it perfect for binge-watching. The comedy originally premiered in 2015 and ended in 2021, but until now it wasn't available on any platform.
The protagonist of Younger This is Liza, a recently divorced, 40-year-old mother eager to re-enter the workforce. With a 15-year gap in her resume, she quickly realizes that no one wants to hire her because of her age. The only solution she can think of, encouraged by her best friend, is to lie about her age and say she's 26. Inexplicably (the viewer must take a leap of faith), a publishing executive buys Liza's lie and hires her as her assistant. From then on, this mother, rather out of touch with the realities of the publishing industry, leads a double life: on one hand, that of a 26-year-old with outrageous fashion sense, and on the other, that of a mature woman with a college-aged daughter. In between, she builds a career and experiences various romantic adventures with a diverse range of suitors, from a 25-year-old tattoo artist to one of her superiors at the company. All of this unfolds against the backdrop of New York City.
Hugh Jackman's new partner
The actress Sutton Foster brings the endearing Liza to life. A Broadway veteran, she is one of the biggest stars in the world of musicals. In fact, she has been nominated seven times for a Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical and once for a Laurence Olivier Award, the British equivalent of the Tonys. Despite her extensive acting career, she became widely known to the public as the partner of Hugh Jackman, whom he began dating after divorcing Deborra-Lee Furness, to whom he had been married for 27 years. Jackman and Foster, both 50, met thanks to a musical: they fell in love when they worked together on the new production of The music man, premiered in New York in 2022.
Apart from Foster, the cast of Younger It features Debi Mazar, who plays Liza's best friend, and Hilary Duff, a millennial icon who here brings to life Kelsey, a young editor who quickly becomes friends with the protagonist.
A series for fans of 'Emily in Paris' and 'Sex and the City'
Younger It has many points in common with Darren Star's other series. Like Sex and the City and Emily in ParisThe protagonist is once again a woman with professional aspirations who often ends up caught in love triangles. As in the case of the Carrie Bradshaw comedy, Younger It's also a book adaptation: it's the television adaptation of Pamela Redmond Satran's eponymous novel, published in 2005. Beyond fans of Star's shows, the new Netflix series may also appeal to followers of The bold typeA fictional series that followed the lives of three women who worked at a women's magazine. As in the case of YoungerThis series has also long since ceased to be available on streaming platforms.
Another of the series' attractions is the participation of stylist Patricia Field, the woman who created the costumes for Sex and the City and The devil wears Prada. In Younger Clothing plays a significant role, as Liza must completely change her style to make those around her believe she is 26 years old. "When I read the script, the first thing I thought was, 'How am I going to make a 40-year-old look 26? I'm not a magician!'" Field explained in an interview with the magazine. US WeeklyThe way to achieve this was by creating a wardrobe full of miniskirts, floral print dresses, and platform shoes. However, the stylist maintains that the key to the process was Sutton Foster herself. "When I met Sutton and experienced her energy and expressiveness, I thought, 'My God, she's really going to do this.' When you see her play the character, you never think, 'This is rubbish.' You never think about her age, because the key is in her movement and her expressions," he argued.
