Russia will maintain its military presence in Syria even though its functions will be "redefined"

The Syrian government has announced a preliminary agreement with Moscow that will allow Russia to maintain its military bases in the country, although their functions will be "redefined." The understanding comes after a year and a half of negotiations, following the fall of Bashar al-Assad's regime, a Vladimir Putin ally.
