LondonDonald Trump always manages to outdo himself, and this time his lack of empathy has outraged the United Kingdom. The President of the United States has shared through his social network, Truth Social, the video of the deadly tiger attack on a young British man, William Chapman, 24, accompanied by the comment: "Never mess with nature!" The events took place on Saturday at the Yorkshire Wildlife Park, a zoo located near Doncaster, in the north of England.
Since then, two videos of the incident have circulated widely through different channels. The victim's family –who had been suffering from mental health problems for years, for which he was receiving medical treatment– publicly asked for the circulation of the images to be stopped immediately. But Trump has ignored this, has shared the video, and, in addition, has added to the same message other images of animal attacks on humans. At this moment it seems that the post has already been deleted, but what continues to circulate is another message with a video generated with artificial intelligence in which one can see Trump facing off against a tiger, and also playing with it, and with which he ends up becoming friends. All this with music that could be part of the soundtrack of the spin-off of The Lion King, and which could be released under the title Me and the Tiger.
William Chapman died as a result of the wounds caused by the Siberian tiger. The animal, which is five years old and weighs 200 kilograms, is named Altai. The video that Trump shared, recorded from behind the fence, shows how the boy enters the enclosure and the tiger grabs him and hits him with its paws before attacking him. It seems that Chapman was scolding the animal without being aware of the danger he was in. Eyewitnesses to the events explained to British media that the young man was wearing headphones and that, before the attack, he had been walking back and forth near the enclosure.
In the statement in which they ask for the dissemination of the images to be stopped, the family says: "The publication and circulation of deeply offensive audiovisual content is causing us extreme suffering at a time of exceptional vulnerability." The relatives have described Chapman as a "bright, affectionate and communicative" young man, who was deeply loved by his own and also loved his family.
The family has left it in the hands of the coroner to determine what role the "potent medication" that Chapman was receiving played, "if it played any at all," in the circumstances of the death. Other witnesses cited by the local press have reported that the young man seemed disconnected from reality before entering the animal's cage.
Yorkshire Wildlife Park has remained closed since Saturday while Doncaster Council, the authority responsible for the zoo's license, investigates the death. According to the park, the keepers tried to pull the tiger away from the young man with several acoustic shots to scare it off. The management has confirmed that Altai will not be put down following the incident.
Aside from Donald Trump's insensitivity, the Chapman family's request focuses on the responsibility of platforms and their users regarding the viralization of dramatic images, especially when the affected person and their relatives cannot control their dissemination. In the case of Truth Social, however, any request for control is in vain.
