BarcelonaThe Catalan economy grew by 2.9% year-on-year in the third quarter of the year, according to the Statistical Institute of Catalonia (Idescat). According to the data released by the organization this Friday, this is a slight slowdown in growth compared to the second quarter, when the Catalan gross domestic product (GDP) expanded by 3% year-on-year. If compared with the period between April and June, the economic expansion was 0.7%.

The figure places the growth of the Catalan economy two tenths of a percentage point above the Spanish average for the period (2.7%). It also exceeds the European figure, which remained at 1.5%, by nearly one and a half points. The report published today collects provisional data, and Idescat will not make the final diagnosis of the country's GDP for the third quarter public until next December 14th.

Most sectors, it must be said, show lower growth than in the second quarter of this year. Construction registers a substantial acceleration of 4.3% compared to the third quarter of 2024. Although the year-on-year jump is large, however, Idescat shows a moderation in the sector's growth compared to the previous quarter, when it rebounded by 5.4% year-on-year. The situation is similar in the industrial fabric, which grew by 1.1% year-on-year, one tenth of a percentage point less than between April and June.

The economic segment that has fared the worst has been agriculture, which grew by only 0.1% year-on-year up to September; a considerable decline when compared to the 1% increase recorded in the second quarter. Services, for their part, have maintained a stable pace, revealing a positive variation of 3.5% compared to 2024, the same figure as three months earlier.
