There is no clear end in sight to that era, more British than Mediterranean.
Atlantic fronts will continue to shape the weather in the coming days, with a bit of everything.
BarcelonaThis Thursday begins with a distinctly cold and wintry feel, along with light showers and drizzle in the west and south of Spain, which will persist in these areas throughout the morning. In the afternoon, sunshine will prevail in most regions, and maximum temperatures will rise. Atlantic storms continue unabated, and over the next few hours and days, new fronts will cross the country, arriving rather weakened, but still keeping the weather highly changeable and unpredictable. This kind of contrasting weather in just a few hours is more typical of areas like the UK than the Mediterranean. No new widespread rain is expected, but some areas will experience showers, accompanied by periods of wind, more snow in the Pyrenees, highly variable skies, and a rollercoaster of temperatures.
All of this follows a markedly cold and wintry Wednesday, with wind in some areas and another round of light showers concentrated only in the southern half of the country. The most notable rainfall was 5 l/m² in Els Ports, where it snowed from around 700 m. These were indirect effects of the storm. Kristinwhich caused a chaotic Wednesday in the rest of the Peninsula, with a real storm of snow, rain, strong wind and rough seas. It snowed in the city of Madrid, causing serious road disruptions.
Thursday: changeable weather
The weather will remain changeable and variable this Thursday. Overnight, cloud cover increased, bringing some light and scattered showers or drizzle to the west and southern half of the country, which will persist throughout the morning in these areas. However, these light rain showers are not expected in the rest of the country. The snow level will fluctuate between 1000 and 1200 meters. Rain is also expected throughout the day in the Valencian Community and the Balearic Islands.
In Catalonia, only a few showers will remain in the afternoon, south of the Ebro River and in the Pyrenees of Lleida, with the snow level around 1,500 meters. It will be sunnier and calmer in the rest of the country. Winds will be moderate, ranging from westerly to mistral, stronger in the Valencian Community and the southern Balearic Islands, where Aemet (the Spanish State Meteorological Agency) has several weather alerts in place.
Early this morning, you'll need to bundle up, as it's decidedly wintry and the minimum temperatures have plummeted. We're seeing sub-zero temperatures across the Pyrenees and Pre-Pyrenees, as well as in many parts of the rest of northern Spain. But the maximum temperatures will rise, and by midday it won't be as cold as Wednesday. Many temperatures are expected to be between 10 and 15 °C, even higher in the south.
New Atlantic fronts
This variability will continue throughout the rest of the week due to the passage of new, weakened Atlantic fronts. No significant rainfall is expected, but the sky will remain changeable, with some showers arriving in the Ponent region and the Lleida Pyrenees. These showers will cross the country from west to east between Friday night and Saturday morning. The wind will remain intermittent, with the strongest gusts expected on Saturday, accompanied by more snow in the Pyrenees. Temperatures will continue to fluctuate due to the constantly changing wind direction. There is no clear end in sight to this unsettled and changeable weather pattern.
