Corruption is not just a human thing, it can also seduce superheroes. And fighting to uncover the truth as ordinary people, when your enemies could destroy the planet in the blink of an eye, is difficult, but not impossible. These are some of the elements present in The Boys, one of Prime Video's most celebrated series that functions as a subversion of the, until a few years ago, very popular superhero genre. The fiction premieres this Wednesday its fifth and final season with two opening episodes and will subsequently air one episode per week until May 20.

The series, which is based on the homonymous comics by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson, was created by director and showrunner Eric Kripke in 2019 and is one of the platform's most acclaimed titles. The official synopsis for the new season details that the world is dominated by Homelander, the most arrogant of The Seven, the group of superheroes from Vought International. Meanwhile, Annie, also known as Starlight, is trying to build a resistance movement.

The fourth season, which ended in July 2024, concluded with a scenario in which the President of the United States enacted martial law and placed Homelander in charge of the country, with all superheroescaptured and imprisoned. The only one who managed to escape is The Butcher, who, with his new tentacles, will seek a way to spread the virus he carries, capable of wiping out superhumans and changing the course of the world.

The success of The Boys led Prime Video to spot the opportunity to create its own franchise. In 2023, the platform released its first spin-off, Gen V, in which the company managing "The Seven" creates a university to train new superheroes who will have to compete among themselves to reach the elite.

The next derivative work of the franchise will be the prequel Vought Rising

, which will feature two characters who already appear in The Boys, Soldier Boy and Stormfront. The new series will focus on the company's origins and its first suspicious murders in the 1950s. Although it is still in production and has no release date, more than one season of the new series is expected.
