BarcelonaWarnings for heavy rain and downpours remain in effect, especially in southern Catalonia. After a Friday with very heavy rain in the Valencian Community, yesterday saw renewed rainfall, which has already exceeded 250 l/m² in some Valencian regions (you'll find all the data at the end of this article).

Instability will continue in the Mediterranean region due to the effects of the Dana. Alice and from the moisture-laden sea winds that will reach the coast, but today, Sunday, the rain will shift north and fall most heavily between Castellón and Terres de l'Ebre, and in Ibiza and Mallorca.

Civil Protection maintains the Inuncat plan alert activated, and Meteocat has yellow and orange warnings active, especially in the south of the country but also along the rest of the central and southern coast due to the risk of downpours. Aemet also has alerts activated in the Balearic Islands and the Valencian Community.

Sunday: marked instability

Rainfall will continue throughout Sunday in Terres de l'Ebre and Castellón, but will decrease in Valencia. The latest development is that unstable conditions will also increase along the rest of the Catalan coast, where scattered showers may occur in the southern half of the coastline and, starting around midday, in parts of the central coast and southern Baix Empordà. As the hours pass, showers will affect several locations at irregular intervals. Inland Catalonia. However, the heaviest rain, in the form of downpours, will fall between Montsià and Baix Ebre. In fact, models continue to predict accumulations that could exceed 100 l/m2 throughout the entire day and intensities greater than 40 l/m2 in just over half an hour.

Partly cloudy day, with clearings towards the West and the Pyrenees. Showers and thunderstorms will continue in the Balearic Islands, sometimes intense.

All this, with temperatures that will generally experience little change and remain slightly above what they would expect in mid-October. In fact, temperatures could rise slightly in the Valencian Community, although highs will generally range between 24°C and 27°C.

Monday: less intense rain

Rain will also continue throughout the beginning of the week along the Catalan coastline, but also across much of the Valencian Community and the Balearic Islands. We won't be talking about intense downpours, but there will be repeated rainfall in areas that have been experiencing heavy, continuous rain for days. The latest development could be the formation of some scattered showers in the Pyrenees, but overall, there will be little. Temperatures will remain unchanged, and the sea conditions will gradually improve after a busy weekend.

Tuesday and Wednesday, more rain

The disposition of the atmospheric centers of action at the European level will mean that, in our latitudes, we will continue to be under the control of unstable and uncertain weather, with the possibility of rain across much of the western Mediterranean coast. The culprit will be a powerful anticyclone, located between England and Ireland, which will block "normal" atmospheric circulation in the north of the continent and make the weather very changeable in our region. The distribution and amount of rainfall that will ultimately fall will have to be confirmed in the coming days, but in some regions, we are already talking about a fairly rainy October. And all of this while we are still in the middle of the month.

Rainfall balance

This Friday, rainfall was already very heavy along the entire coast of the Valencian Community, especially between Valencia and Alicante, where more than 100 l/m² fell in several cases, accumulations that have been repeated this Saturday. Highlights of this episode so far include the 273 l/m² accumulated in Carcaixent, in the Ribera Alta region; the 268 l/m² in Miramar, in La Safor region; the 263 l/m² in Gandía; the 259 l/m² in the Columbretes Islands, off the coast of Castellón; and the 251 l/m² in Sollana. In Carcaixent, in fact, this Saturday saw 201 l/m², 100 of them in just one hour. In Catalonia, the most notable records on Saturday were the 52 l/m² at Mas de Barberans and the 51 l/m² in Els Ports Natural Park, both in Montsià. All of this has caused some flooding and local incidents, although none were significant, as occurred in October of last year.
