Quiet morning and thunder during the afternoon
Heavy rain warning in the northeast and Pyrenees
BarcelonaThe passage of a new cold air furrow at high altitude will destabilize the weather this Sunday. Showers and storms will increase, with an afternoon that is expected to be unsettled, especially to the north of the territory and in Central Catalonia. The last polar front has caused a significant cool-down, with an atmosphere more typical of March than of May. Snow has fallen in the Pyrenees below 1,400 m and has left wintery, postcard-like landscapes at medium and high altitudes.
This morning the atmosphere was less cold than yesterday. Nevertheless, minimum temperatures between 1°C and 3°C were still recorded in the Pyrenean valleys and values close to 4°C or 6°C in the interior. It rose to 1°C in Puigcerdà, 6°C in Vic, and 7°C in Lleida. At Tossa d'Alp (at 2,500 m) they dropped to -3°C and to -2°C in Núria. On the coast, they ranged between 10°C and 12°C. A more overcast sky during the early morning meant that the atmosphere cooled down less (some drizzle even escaped, leaving 1 mm in Malgrat de Mar).
Sunday: afternoon showers and thunder
The morning will be calm, with some clouds lingering on the coast that could bring some drizzle early in the day. In the afternoon, instability will increase and with the passage of a trough of cold air at high altitude, the weather will become complicated. More scattered showers and storms are expected towards the Pyrenees, Pre-Pyrenees, Central Catalonia, the pre-coastal areas, and Los Puertos. Many maximum temperatures will range between 17 °C and 23 °C, but will approach 25 °C in parts of Poniente and the southern interior.
Snow will reappear in the Pyrenees, with showers of granular snow. The snowfall could accumulate 2 to 5 cm above 2,200 m, although during showers it could set below 2,000 m.
The showers could fall with strong intensity (more than 20 l/m² in 30 minutes) and leave, locally, hail. In fact, Meteocat already warns of this possibility:
A little warmth in the middle of the week
An instability that will decrease in the coming days, as by mid-week anticyclonic calm will once again prevail. The cold air mass we have over us right now will move away, and this will make the heat more evident at midday from Wednesday onwards, with many highs of 25 °C to 30 °C in the pre-littoral and inland areas. On Tuesday, from midday onwards, some showers are expected in mountainous areas of the northeast, in the Pyrenees, and also in the Port Massif and in the north of Central Catalonia. They will be of lesser intensity and more localized.
