The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences will announce the winner (or winners) of the 2023 Nobel Prize in Economics on Monday, October 12. It will be from 11:45 a.m., Catalan time.
Last year, the winners were the economists Joel Mokyr, Philippe Aghion and Peter Howitt “for having explained economic growth driven by innovation”. In the case of Mokyr, the award sought to recognize the way in which the economist has investigated the conditions that fostered the explosion of creativity that led to the industrial revolution. Aghion and Howitt, for their part, have stood out for formulating, jointly, a theory of innovation based on Joseph Schumpeter's concept of "creative destruction" in an empirically testable way that is useful for public policy.
The prize is endowed with 12 million Swedish kronor, after the Nobel Foundation increased the amount in 2026. It should be noted, however, that unlike the other awards, the Economics prize was not created by Alfred Nobel. In fact, it began to be awarded 50 years later than the original prizes, at the request of the Bank of Sweden and under the name of the Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel. All of this was done with the consent of the Nobel Foundation.
