Ten years of excavations in Yátova give value to the Iberian settlements of Valencia

ValenciaThe University of Valencia (UV) and the Prehistoric Research Service (SIP) of the Provincial Council of Valencia are closing the archaeological work at the Iberian settlement of Pic dels Alls in Iàtova, in the demarcation of Valencia, after ten excavation campaigns. This site, inhabited between approximately 2,900 and 2,000 years ago, is an asset of cultural interest and from it come the most important collections of Iberian script texts known, made on lead sheets.

The technical and scientific direction of this excavation has been assumed since 2017 by the UV and since 2019 it has been financed by the SIP of the Provincial Council of Valencia. According to the university, the challenge now is to continue investigating the data collected in the field and laboratory work, and on the part of the Iàtova City Council and the Museum of Prehistory of Valencia, it is to continue the assessment of the remains with the consolidation of structures, guided tours and the cultural dissemination of this settlement that is part of the Route of the Iberians of Valencia.

A project to advance the knowledge of Iberian societies

“Similarly, it is intended to deepen the study of the recovered materials (ceramics, metal, numismatics, glass paste, fauna, charcoal, seeds, etc.) and to publish the results obtained extensively in a monograph. In short, the project has made it possible to advance in the knowledge of the Iberian societies of the current Valencian area, particularly in the centuries after the Roman conquest (2nd-1st century BC), in a complex context of contact and cultural change known as Romanization,” explain Consuelo Mata and David Quixal, professor and professor from the Department of Prehistory, Archaeology and Ancient History of the UV and scientific co-directors of the excavation.
