The women's football league clubs approve Pau Gasol's millionaire investment
The operation, of 55 million euros, will represent the highest private investment
BarcelonaThe sixteen clubs that make up the women's football league have approved Pau Gasol's investment in the competition. The former Barça player – through his company Gasol16 Ventures and the company Fortified Partners – will invest 55 million euros, representing the highest private investment the league has received. In fact, never before has a private fund invested so much money in a sports competition in the state or a women's league at a European level.
This investment, announced a week ago, had to be approved by the clubs, who listened to the arguments of the former basketball player before giving their vote of confidence. An investment that would aim to "strengthen the commercial and operational structure of the F League, the sustainable growth and consolidation of the clubs and the projection of the players", according to the League's statement. The 55 million will be distributed over the next four seasons. During the meeting, the clubs gave majority support to an operation that represents the highest private investment received by a women's football league worldwide. Pau Gasol himself, accompanied by Beatriz Álvarez, president of the league, will present the agreement this Tuesday in Madrid starting at 4:30 PM, and will provide more details.
Gasol is experiencing intense days, as just this week he presented a new proposal from the International Olympic Committee to give $10,000 to athletes participating in the Olympic Games. The novelty was announced during the 146th session of the organization held in Lausanne, where Gasol was in charge of being the spokesperson, as he is part of the Olympic Committee as a representative of the athletes.
At the Lliga F meeting, the evolution of the Lliga F audience growth was also discussed, which has reached 7.5 million viewers, with an 11.2% increase compared to the previous season. In the coming days, the process of commercializing the audiovisual rights of the competition for the next seasons will open. All clubs, however, admit that work needs to be done as more players leave for abroad each year, as has happened with Alèxia Putellas. These departures could negatively impact stadium attendance. In the 2024-25 season, Lliga F gathered nearly 400,000 spectators throughout the entire season, a 7% increase compared to the previous year, but it remained a very low figure, with an average of 1,650 fans per game. Pau Gasol's initiative, according to club spokespersons, could help improve the league's level.
