Two dead in a head-on collision in Poblenou: one of the cars was fleeing the police driving the wrong way

The driver of the reckless vehicle and the driver of a car that was stopped at a traffic light have lost their lives; the passenger of the second is seriously but stably injured.

According to police sources, a vehicle fleeing the police in the wrong direction collided head-on with another car that was stopped at a traffic light. Both the reckless driver, who was around 30 years old, and the driver of the stopped vehicle, aged 58, lost their lives in the accident. The passenger of the second car was also injured and was taken in serious condition to the Hospital del Mar, where she has been stabilized. Her life is not in danger.

The events took place at the intersection of Pallars and Fluvià streets, in the Poblenou neighborhood of Barcelona. According to police sources, the Mossos d'Esquadra had received a report of a vehicle with French plates driving recklessly in the area. The driver was invading sidewalks, skidding, and driving at a speed far exceeding the limit. Previously, the man was outside the Hotel Hilton on Diagonal avenue and was causing disturbances at the entrances. In fact, hotel staff had alerted the Mossos to his behavior.

When the police located him, a pursuit began, but the vehicle managed to escape. During the escape, it entered the oncoming lane and collided head-on with the car that was stopped at a traffic light. The Barcelona Firefighters carried out the extrication of the three affected individuals: the two fatalities and the seriously injured person.

According to the investigation, everything points to the kamikaze driver being under the influence of drugs. A fact that the Minister of the Interior, Núria Parlon, also pointed out in a tweet on X. In fact, the canine unit of the Guàrdia Urbana traveled to the scene of the accident to inspect the vehicle.

The Guàrdia Urbana has opened an investigation to clarify the circumstances of the accident. For its part, the Emergency Medical System (SEM) has activated eight ambulances to assist those affected.

With these two fatal victims, eight people have now lost their lives in traffic accidents in Barcelona this year. In a statement, Barcelona City Council has conveyed its condolences to the families and friends of the victims.

The president of Junts in Barcelona City Council, Jordi Martí, stated that the two deaths in the accident on Pallars street this Sunday "confirm the degradation of coexistence and safety" in the city. "We are reaching very worrying extremes. Every day criminal acts of great impact and gravity occur," he expressed on X. Furthermore, he added that it is necessary to "expel these people" from the lives of Barcelonians.
