BarcelonaBarcelona Zoo is now seeking architects to design its crown jewel. The Barcelona City Council and Barcelona Serveis Municipals (BSM) launched an international architecture competition this Friday to design Bioscope, which is intended to be one of the main attractions of the park of the future. The facility, which aims to offer "an interactive journey to the origin and evolution of species," will be a hybrid combining the presence of some animals with the latest technology in immersive experiences. As explained during the project's presentation last October, BSM—which will fully finance the €18 million cost of Bioscope—aims for a building with "unique architecture and design" that reinforces its message. It will have approximately 3,000 square meters and is scheduled to open in 2030. It will be built at the intersection of Wellington and Pujades streets, where the jaguar and Sri Lankan leopard enclosures are currently located. The Bioscope will offer an immersive journey through the history of life through museum exhibits and the presence of species linked to key stages of evolution and conservation projects in which the Zoo participates. In a statement this Friday, First Deputy Mayor Laia Bonet highlighted "the step forward that the Bioscope competition represents in transforming the Zoo into a benchmark space for biodiversity preservation." In addition to the Bioscope, the future transformation of the zoo also includes the creation of two more new areas: Discovering the Mediterranean – a new large area that will bring together all the species most typical of the Mediterranean – and Isolated, an "immersive and interactive" experience in which visitors can delve into the world of evolution.
