BarcelonaWildfires are the biggest threat every summer in our country's forests, but this year the danger is especially high due to the extreme heat that has hit us steadily since the end of May. The effects of the climate crisis are clearly being felt. The great Ponent fire, which has caused two deaths and destroyed nearly 6,000 hectaresThe extraordinary violence and speed of this fire, unprecedented until now, sends us a message: sixth-generation wildfires have arrived in Catalonia. Therefore, in this article, we monitor the fires that may start throughout the summer in Catalonia, as well as those currently active, and the danger zones.

Map of fires in Catalonia this summer

Since the beginning of June, we have been experiencing extreme weather conditions, with persistent, stifling heat and little rain. Catalonia has experienced its warmest June on record Since records began, there are areas of the country where practically not a drop has fallen since May, especially on the coast. And there is another factor that further aggravates the situation: the large amount of dry vegetation in the forests that could serve as as fuel in case of fire. Many trees have died due to the historic drought of recent years, and the abundant spring rains have caused an understory to grow that has now dried out. A perfect combination for generating large fires, just when we had finally emerged from the drought. The climate crisis is relentless.

The Catalan Fire Department's viewer shows which vegetation fires are active in near real time and also indicates the update date. This helps visualize which forest fires are active in Catalonia.

In the viewer, you'll see firefighter actions that won't appear on the forest fire summary map. The first map may not include all the fires, especially the smaller ones and those not related to forest fires (in urban areas), but we'll try to include the major ones we detect. If we miss any, please let us know with a comment on this article.
