85-year-old man arrested for the violent death of his former daughter-in-law in Madrid

BarcelonaThe National Police arrested an 85-year-old man this Saturday morning for the violent death of his 47-year-old former daughter-in-law in Madrid. The victim's body was found with signs of strangulation in the home that the two allegedly shared in the Madrid district of Arganzuela.

According to sources from the Madrid Police Headquarters who informed Efe, the alert was given this Saturday at 11:10 a.m. by the detainee's son, who was the victim's former partner. The man alerted the police that his father had called him claiming that he had committed "a serious act" and that he was waiting for the officers to arrive.

The detainee is an 85-year-old man of Spanish nationality and the 47-year-old victim is of Asian origin, according to the same sources, who stated that for the moment more circumstances of the event are unknown. The investigation of the case has been taken over by Homicide Group VI.

The spokesperson for the Community of Madrid's 112 Emergency Service, Luis Serrano, reported that when municipal police officers arrived at the home on Ferrocarril Street, they found the woman supposedly in cardiorespiratory arrest and began resuscitation maneuvers.

However, emergency personnel were only able to confirm her death. The victim showed signs on her body that apparently indicate she died by strangulation, but Serrano stressed that it will be the autopsy that establishes the cause of death.

While awaiting clarification of the facts, the crime this Saturday in Madrid—the fifth against a woman—would, however, be a "family feminicide," which is the category that the Spanish government grants to feminicides at the hands of men from the victim's family environment, without the perpetrator being the partner or former partner.

Another crime in Leganés

Since the beginning of the year, 37 women have been murdered by gender-based violence in Spain; 1,378 since 2003, when data began to be officially collected. In the Community of Madrid, four cases have been identified this year; the same figure as in Catalonia.

In the afternoon, however, National Police agents reported that they are investigating the death of a woman found with signs of violence in the Madrid town of Leganés. The events took place around 3:15 p.m., when a call was received at the 091 room alerting that a man who had entered his daughter's home had found the interior of the house in disarray. Inside, they found the body and a bladed weapon stained with blood.

The victim is the man's daughter, who had keys to the house and who had approached the place because he had not heard from her for some time, police sources confirmed to EFE. The Violent Crimes Group of the Scientific Police and the Homicide Group VI have traveled to the scene and have taken charge of the investigation. According to the same sources, the police continue to investigate the facts and no hypothesis is ruled out.
