MadridThe President of Ukraine has landed a few minutes ago in Madrid to meet with dignitaries and senior officials within the framework of the XXX Ibero-American Summit, as confirmed by Moncloa sources to ARA. One of the meetings he will hold will be with the President of the Spanish Government, Pedro Sánchez. They will meet this Thursday, late in the afternoon, at the Moncloa Palace. "The goal of this meeting is to reaffirm Spain's support for Ukraine, as it has done since the beginning of the war," underline sources from the Spanish government.

It will not be Zelensky's only bilateral meeting, as he will also meet with "various leaders to exchange impressions on the situation in his country, its global repercussions, and the main challenges for international peace and security." He will do so once the Ibero-American Summit, which starts this Wednesday in Madrid and will last until tomorrow, Thursday, has concluded. It is the fourth year it has been held in Spain, and although the Spanish government has made an effort to ensure it has a strong profile, the tragic train accident in Toledo has overshadowed it, at least in Spanish domestic politics.

Among the notable absences are those of the brand-new President of Brazil, Lula da Silva, and the President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum. These are two international allies for Pedro Sánchez. Government sources have pointed to scheduling reasons.

Fifth visit to Spain

This is Zelensky's fifth visit to Spain, who will take advantage of the presence of Ibero-American leaders in Madrid to roll out an agenda of bilateral meetings. The previous one was in March of this same year. Sánchez received him at the Moncloa Palace and announced 1 billion euros in bilateral military aid in 2026. The Ukrainian president had visited Spain only four months ago, and after a meeting also at the Moncloa, the Spanish president had already announced 615 million euros in military aid to Ukraine.
