Feijóo calls for elections due to the Ceuta crisis: "The Spanish government knew about it and covered it up"

MadridAlberto Núñez Feijóo has once again traveled to Ceuta to demand accountability from the Spanish government for the crisis resulting from the massive entry of over 70,000 migrants into the autonomous city. After attending the institutional event for Ceuta Day and on a morning marked by the Spanish police report that blames Morocco for the events, the leader of the PP has directly pointed at Moncloa. He considers that the Spanish government “disregarded” all the “repeated warnings” it had about the situation and believes it is most responsible for the “dramatic consequences” of the arrival of migrants: “Death and invasion”. He stressed that the Spanish government “knew it and covered it up” and regretted that it is “more concerned” with “saving itself” and “protecting” Morocco. In this regard, he argued that Pedro Sánchez “is not in a position to guarantee the security” of Spain and called for, in this scenario, “the only way out” to be an immediate election to “give voice to the people”.

The response on behalf of the Spanish government was given by the Minister of Territorial Policy, Ángel Víctor Torres, who is also in charge of the unified command over Ceuta. "Nothing new, since the first day he asks for elections on any matter," he replied from the autonomous city. "For almost four years he has been in a permanent obsession because he has never accepted the parliamentary majority," he added.

Fejóo also sees it as “essential” that judicial responsibilities are assumed: “It cannot go unpunished. We will not stop in defense of the dignity of Spaniards until we know the truth and can tell it to the citizens,” proclaimed the PP leader. The popular party filed a complaint last week in the case that is open in the National High Court, to which the National Centre for Immigration and Borders has sent the document that is now at the centre of attention. It was born out of a complaint by Iustitia Europa and Judge María Tardón is awaiting the Public Prosecutor's Office's decision to formally open a criminal case.

Feijóo also argued that the “attack” that Ceuta “suffered” was not a “spontaneous migratory movement,” but rather an “operation” that “came out and was consented to” by Morocco. “Everything indicates that it was also coordinated by Morocco,” he concluded. Finally, he called on the Spanish government to “immediately” summon Morocco's ambassador to Spain to ask for explanations for the African country's role on July 30 and 31, and to call the Spanish ambassador to Morocco for consultations “to evaluate the most appropriate measures”.

Early on, the PP's number two, Miguel Tellado, reproached Marlaska for acting “surprised” after having been “denying” Morocco's role “for a month” and called on him to resign for being “shameless, incompetent, and a liar”. For her part, the popular spokesperson in Congress, Ester Muñoz, called for the resignation of the entire Spanish government. “Not only has it lied to us, but it has also decided to defend those who have invaded us,” she said on esRadio.

“Ceuta is in danger”

During the institutional act of Ceuta Day, the president of the autonomous city, Juan Jesús Vivas, has called to “accelerate the repatriation processes” of migrants: “We need a definite timeframe, we need a light of hope at the end of the tunnel we are in,” he said. He also took the opportunity to make a cry for help to “save Ceuta from the abyss” and “pull it out of the ICU.”

“Ceuta cannot continue living in a pressure cooker that can explode at any moment,” he expressed. “It is in serious danger,” he added. Likewise, he stressed that there are still “many questions in the air” that “must be resolved.” And he made it clear that he will continue to demand information: “The truth must be known, only from the truth can we build the future and foster hope.”
