Tesla picks Barcelona city for Spanish subsidiary HQ
The role of the company will only be that of an importer, as Tesla has no plans at this time to manufacture in Spain

Barcelona is now a headquarters for the world's most revolutionary electric car company, the USA-based Tesla. The group —founded by Elon Musk— has chosen the Catalan city for the headquarters of its Spanish subsidiary, as confirmed by the company yesterday. The company had already announced that it would open offices in Barcelona, where it is recruiting employees, and the business will carry the name Tesla Spain, as a subsidiary of Tesla International BV, headquartered in Holland. According to information filed by Tesla with the Mercantile Registry, the President and CEO of the subsidiary will be Marc Cerdà, who since 2014 has been in the company's international tax department. Other new directors will be Stephan William Werkman, until now in the European headquarters in Amsterdam, and Susan Repo, who is Vice-President and Financial Manager of the company in San Francisco.
The company began operations on September 20th, and was created with 3,000 euros of capital with a legal address on Muntaner Street in Barcelona. The purpose of the company includes distribution of the company's "imported electric cars", and will include the opening of dealerships and points of sale. However, the role of the company will only be that of an importer, as Tesla has no plans at this time to manufacture in Spain. At the beginning of October Tesla unveiled its plans to enter the Spanish and Portuguese markets, a deployment that comes late in comparison with the rest of European countries. In any case, Tesla has not announced when it will open the first dealerships in Spain.
Currently, its website has announcements of some twenty job offers in Barcelona, Madrid, and Lisbon. The company is seeking, for example, Human Resources Managers, Technical Assistants, and a Communications Director.
Home energy storage batteries
In addition to the sale of electric cars, the subsidiary will also handle Tesla's energy storage business. The company will distribute the so-called Powerwall batteries, targeted especially for home use and self-generation of renewable energy. In addition, it will handle maintenance and installation of the six superchargers that the American firm already has in Spain, four of which are in Catalonia.
