WashingtonFederal agents from the United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS) searched the home of Democratic congresswoman Ilhan Omar this Monday, as part of an investigation opened by the Department of Justice to determine if the legislator's parents, of Somali origin, committed irregularities in their immigration process. The raid marks an escalation in the harassment against Omar by Donald Trump, who earlier this year said that the legislator should be deported despite being a U.S. citizen. The execution of the search warrant comes with just over three weeks remaining before the Congressional elections, scheduled for November 3.
Omar has denounced on social media that the search is "an attempt to target political enemies and instrumentalize the authorities." "For ten years, Trump has made me the target of his baseless lies and smear campaigns. This is just the latest escalation of his political intimidation campaign," the Democrat wrote on X. She assured, however, that she is doing well.
The search of Omar's home in Washington took place after the DHS made public that it had been investigating the congresswoman over her family's immigration process for the last few months. Omar arrived in the United States with her parents when she was still a child, fleeing the civil war in Somalia in the nineties. Before stepping onto U.S. territory, the family lived for some time in a refugee camp in Kenya until they managed to move to the United States through a refugee program. Omar obtained U.S. citizenship in 2000, when she was seventeen years old.
Recently, the Trump administration has also attempted to open other investigations into other matters against the congresswoman, such as Omar's campaign financing and her relationships with foreign citizens. The search of her home, however, occurs within the sixty-day period prior to the holding of the elections. The Department of Justice recommends that, during this window of time, investigators be very cautious when carrying out any type of action that could influence the voting.
Representative for Minnesota
Omar is a congresswoman for Minnesota, a state that suffered at the beginning of the year one of the most aggressive terror campaigns by anti-immigration agents, who report to the DHS. The raids took place over several weeks and initially focused on the large Somali diaspora in Minneapolis, the city with the largest population in Minnesota. It then spiraled into violence and ended with the murder of two American citizens at the hands of ICE.
During the aggressive ICE campaign, Omar confronted the American president directly and denounced the excessive violence and terror to which the population was being subjected. "A large part of the fraud in Minnesota, up to 90%, is caused by people who entered our country illegally from Somalia," countered Trump, who also labeled the politician a "con artist."
Omar is also known for being part of what was known as the Squad, the group of Democratic lawmakers leaning most towards the left within Congress, which includes congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
